What gets me is when you ring BT about slow broadband they always say its your equipment at fault.

Strange thing about fibre optics..........(unless I have my info wrong...) when they built the new estate at Hampton Hargate, Bt installed fibreoptic cabling, (super for telephones,)which resulted in snail speed broad band.....so they "HAD" to re wire with copper cabling.............how come companies such as Sky can get high speed broad band with fibre optics?

bob we only get between 2/3 mb where we live. scottish hydro electric promise speeds of 20mb. when i asked them if we would get that here, they said after doing a line check, sorry you are to rural and far away from the exchange. if you lived ina town or city/less isolated you would get better.

so the adverts might promise 20 mb but it depends on where you live and how near you are to an exchange. im with talk talk and pay 19.99 per month, thats broadband only, unlimited usage.

sometimes around 10pm each night it goes really slow and quite often crashes. really annoying for my oh when hes uploading photos.

I think BT will have some difficulty giving the speed they are stating, as they still use copper wires for their telephone lines, not fibre optics.

Yes,The price increase for BT is from October....well,they've recently given their employees a pay raise to avert a strike !.

I've tested my Broadband speed..interesting.

Speedtest .net give's me 6.85 mbps

Broadband .co.uk give's me 6.83 mbps

BT give's me 8 mbps ?...my provider !.

I've emailed BT and asked them about this magical 20 mbps they keep advertising.I live approx 5 minutes walk from their exchange.

The icon on my toolbar reads a steady 5.40 Mbps.
We're about 2 miles out of town at the end of a lot of wire.

Ours, with BT is currently 5.35Mb/s. We use speedtest.net. We've been told of an increase, in price but are just grinning and bearing it as we have had good service when things go wrong.

OH also types in our IP address which gives all sorts of incomprehensible detail, but apparently it can tell if there is a fault on the line or in our router. It doesn't *say* it, but he has got used to the usual numbers and knows if they are lower than expected.

What you could do is go to a few broadband providers and they have test for your line to see what you get.
O2,Sky and BE are suppose to be good.

Thorney Report 25 Aug 2010 12:21

I get 6.9 mb,but Im quite happy because its stable.
A friend of mine gets 20mb and its up and down like yoyo at one point he was getting 4mb.

just got a letter from Bt, telling me that my line rental is going up by 50 p( is this due to the governments B/b intentions? I wonder?).
also as I am with AOL, Bt are offering upto 20Mb.........if I go with them.
However on their website, is a speed checker, now I suspected that my speed is not the fastest, but on checking with Bt's checker I am only getting ONE Mb /sec at the moment........any one else got snail speed B/band?
