Anyone watching this on BBC1? The stuff that goes to waste is unbelieveable. Couldn't believe about the eggs just because they were small.

Loved the programme

Shocking about the amount of food that supermarkets will not stock because of size etc. I do not care if a cucumber is curved or not.

It was very good and showed clearly that biggest wasters of food are the supermarkets. I do not care whether fruit/veg and eggs are mishapen - it is the taste that matters and if these items were sold cheaply then everyone would benefit.

Where were the representatives from Asda, Waitrose, Sainsburys, Tesco etc? Says a lot. Only two were represented Co-Op and Morrisons.

Loved the programme.

O.H. made a point perhaps if we didn`t have sell by and use by date ~there would be so much waste.
Whos bright idea was it to put thse on goods?

We watched this and thoroughly enjoyed it. Our opinion is that all the waste is down to the supermarkets, making demands for 'perfect' food.
In the past, the OH has had dealings with the distibutors to supermarkets, and been in their sheds when packing food. If the supermarkets say they want all their green beans, for instance, to be straight and 12" long, that is what is packed. The same with onions, if they are not of a particular spherical size, out they go out. I asked him what happens to the extras and he said, as far as he knew, they were either turned back in the ground as fertilizer, or fed to the pigs.
We have an allotment, and those beans that come out abit curly, are just the same as those that come out straight. We also get small onions aswell as large, and it is the same with beetroot. All our products are eaten irrespective of size and shape.
If you are fortunate to shop at a green grocers, you will see that his beans are all shapes and sizes.
So, we must lay this scandel with our food, firmly at the doorstep of the supermarkets.
All the Best

PS., I am the type of cook that can always turn leftovers into something else, either for the next day, or for the freezer.

Before the advent of supermarkets and freezers I suspect very little food was wasted - WW2 and rationing taught at least 2 generations that and various vans called on the housewife sometimes daily.

I could always turn most leftovers into something else - potatoes into potato cakes, mince add veg and make cornish pasties, hot pot too makes good pasties. OH would never eat hotpot but loved my pasties - about 5 years ago I owned up but being stubborn he still will not eat hotpot. (he is a southerner) - must be in the genes!!!

If I really had leftovers they could be used as dog's dinner or breakfast. Alas we are dogless for past 2 years.
