I know this is probably a daft question but my grt granddad was born and raised near Stirling in Scotland. He seemed to have a nickname of Granville although we cannot find any family member with this name I wondered if anyone could shed any light on why he might have such a nickname. would appreciate any ideas. (His actual christian name was John)

That's interesting...
The name was added to someone on my tree when he married for the 3rd time.

He started life as Daniel, married as Daniel, then again as Daniel, then suddenly acquired Granville as a middle name from somewhere when he married wife number 3.in 1908
He was back to just Daniel at death !.

....not that this helps you though, ...Sorry

Thanks Gwyn,
It's a shame we can't go back in time and ask them. I wish I'd asked more questions when my parents were alive - mind you I don't expect they would have the answer as they didn't divulge much about family life. I don't think my parents were as nosey as me! hey ho on with the search.
Regards
Rosemary

On the premise that people 'take on' the name of those they admire, the only famous Granville I can find for that era is Granville Leveson-Gower, 2nd Earl Granville, who was in the Liberal Party!
