Hi there,

As anyone during their reseach found situations where names of individuals have been changed, maybe they didn't like the name given to them so changed it completely or just altered it slightly.

Whilst searching for my ancesters I recently came across an old family tree map a Genes Reunited member kindly passed onto me it included my great great paternal grandparent's who married 2nd Feb 1852 St Mary's Church Lace Market Nottingham.

Their siblings were named - NELLIE; MARY; ANN; JACK; EMMA; GEORGE; HANNAH; ELIZABETH - this caused me a problem because i couldn't find thier daughter ELLEN, I suddenly realized she referred herself as NELLIE !

How about an Ellen who decided to be a Doris? At least mother in law remembered about it, or we'd still be hunting - lol

I've got a few.
My great aunt Nell was really Alice.
Her mother Amelia was really Agnes - Amelia was her second name. Agnes's sister Bella was really Ethelrinda (Bella wasn't HER second name!)
My ggrandfather Sidney was really Gifford. His brothers, known as Frederick and Ernest were really Ivor and Sylvanus (why make it easy for descendants to trace you by keeping your unusual forenames - I was lucky their sister kept her own name!!)
Great uncle Leslie was really (another) Ivor.
Grandad's best mate Stan was registered as George.
My dad was known by his second name.
My brother doesn't use his birth name

....and that's only the ones I've found/was told or knew about!!

My MIL was Ellen. some called her Ellie ,fair enough, but some family members called her Pat. reason, her dads family were Irish and so she was the shortened female version of being a Patrick!

didnt help when i was looking up her birth for 1904 and she was in Ireland by 1911 with paternal grandparents
