Just heard that 20 cars were destroyed by fire last night in the Long Term Car park at Stansted, Hope to goodness its not my daughter & sil car or my grandson & his family car, they all went to Ibiza on Sat and both cars are in that car park. BIG problems if they are as there are 3 children too and they all have to get home to Kent & both cars are used to get to work .

Fingers crossed that it is not theirs. Is there anyway you can contact the airport and find out, although it may be best not to tell your family until the day before they fly home. Let them enjoy their holiday in blissful ignorance.

Found this quote from the Daily Mail website

A spokesman for Stansted Airport said: 'It will be an unpleasant surprise for the owners returning to find their cars burnt-out. But we are arranging free taxis to take them home or a 40% discount with a car rental firm here at the airport.

At least that is something positive.

edit - a bit more of the article...............Stansted boasts the biggest open-air car park of any European airport with a total capacity of 26,500 vehicles...............

So the odds that their car is affected is very remote (fingers crossed)

How awful.
If we've used long term parking, it's usually because a flight was arriving at some unearthly hour.
It's the hassle factor as much as the actual loss that is a problem.

I hope your family's cars are safe Shirley, but some poor souls are in for a shock.

We often use airport parking of one sort of another. Next weekend we will be in Purple Parking Heathrow for a month. I feel so sorry for all those people coming back to such a shock. Apparently it spread fast because of the high winds. A complication for making a claim is that they probably can't identify which car had the original problem that started it. They think it was an electrical spark. As you say it is the hassle not only the shock, especially if you are arriving very late when you are tired, and with young children. You are right not to tell them but I guess they might see an English paper anyway so may know.

Well just spoken to SIL and they are home OK all knackered cos they travelled overnight and then had 1½hr drive home. They didnt know about the fire and didnt see any ref to it when they landed. So ,thankfully their cars are OK but others wont be so lucky
