well I do yes, though I have never been there. My father's family originated from Southend and I would like to find out if there is a link between them and James Murrell 'The Cunning man' born Rochford.

That looks really interesting Rose - will read it properly when I have more time. St Mary's Hawkwell is still in use and the connections with witchcraft in some of the villages are still said to be there.

I once worked with someone called Murrell but have no idea of her family background.

In the 1851 census, a relative was a Tailor, age 30, single, of Rochford Union Workhouse, Essex.

rambling rose .I cannott seem to get on the site you added. But i do know of the cunning and his daughter. There are alway three witches in the area and other tales. I will keep trying to get on the site . does it have a name to go by.or something .

Hi Carol , if you just google 'cunning murrell ' there are various items, that one should be about the 4th down and is the most complete family history, but the other sites will give you a good idea of him.

Hi Joy

The workhouse then became the hospital but, certainly when I moved down here nearly 30 years ago, older residents still called it the workhouse. Not very nice to think then when you are ill you end up in the workhouse! Now it's largly residential properties. Union Lane still exists though.
