I have the volume and page number for a marriage I am looking for. I'm new to research in England
How do I get access to the full record of the marriage giving dates of birth/addresses etc

You can order the cert online from

http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/

it will cost £9.95

edit there is just a chance if it is a London marriage before 1921 that the cert is viewable on Ancestry ...if that is the case I can look for you.

Thanks Rose
Marriage was in Manchester.
Will this GRO connection provide dates of birth and place of birth of the couple?

It should give you names ,ages and occupations of bride and groom, age (that they give, not necessarily true age) , address theyare living at time, and the names and occupations of fathers.

It won't give you place of birth or the exact date...

depending on the names once you have a rough idea when they were born you should be able to find them in Freebmds online and also on the 1911 census. Plenty of help on here in finding those if you get stuck.

Thanks again Rose.
I have ordered a copy of the marriage cert online. Expect it will take about a week.
I am doing this for a friend who is impressed with my tree BUT my roots are not in England hence the help needed.

Is there any shortcut to establishing whether married again later or to finding his death and who reported using the Birth date I hope to get from the marriage cert lead?

no shortcut as such, it really does depend on the name , if it is say John Smith you are going to struggle if it is a not too common name with hopefully a middle initial, marriage indices can be looked at on Freebmd or Ancestry ( for later marriages) hopefully there will be only a few and some which can be eliminated without having to buy certificates.

The birth details may well give you a good idea of date of death OR vice versa for example my mum appears in the Ancestry death index thus

Name: Doris Murrell
Birth Date: 10 Apr 1920
Death Registration Month/Year: Jan 1999
Age at death (estimated): 78
Registration district: De Meirionnydd
Inferred County: Gwynedd

you would have to buy the death cert to see who the informant was.

the death cert will likely give you his status married or widower of???....., but the informant could be any one. not neccesarily a relative. the info given is to the best of the informants knowledge, sadly not always accurate!
should contain info on date of birth and cause of death......

I don't think men are noted as ...Widower of......unfortunately.

Women who are married are noted as Wife of...or ..Widow of....

Death registrations after 1969 should show date and place of birth.

English marriage certificates don't contain nearly so much information as some from overseas.
I've seen a NZ one for the first time this week.
Wow !...even birthplace of the couple and their mother's name AND maiden name shown..
.What a bonus.

Knew i'd seen it somewhere....
