I have had an email from Paypal asking me to click on Legal Agreements contained in the email and then on update policy agreements.

Not sure if this is genuine or not,i do have a paypal account.Anyone else had this email.

I have just deleted a spam email from paypal, I don't even have an account so I guess it's one doing the rounds.
So it sounds dodgy to me!

Goodness, don't we have to be 'on our toes' these days. I have an account with Paypal, but haven't received an e-mail like this from them. I've been with Hotmail for years, but since they changed their format recently, I have been receiving all sorts of irritating stuff I wasn't previously, which I keep deleting, but they come back. I want to block them, but you have to open the e-mail to do that.

Blimey, O'Reilly, just checked and e-mail from Paypal in my inbox!

Delete it ! don't answer it.

Talking of scams,
"they" have even got in on emails to likely taxpayers advising them of possible rebates, in exchange for banking details.......or personal data.

Be Aware......... its a minefield out there!!

hoax-slayer.com seems to be a good website for e-mail hoaxes/internet scams.

although, there appears to be a genuine paypal info email. re: new methods of storing transactions, etc...........too long for me to go through ALL the terms n conditions......but..as I dont actually have a account,( I only pay for things via paypal, and am not a seller)......I will let it ride out

You have m wondering now. About three weeks ago I got an Email from paypal saying my card was about to expire and would I give my new card number. As it does not expire while the end of this month and I haven't got the replacement yet how could I give it to them. I think this may be a scam, what do you think? Elaine.

I received an email from Paypal on the 7th Sept. One way You can tell is it is genuine it because it will contain your Paypal name within the body of the email. Scam messages do not, and are often addressed simply as Dear User

The Heading of mine appeared as follows:-

Inspector Green Pen, we've made some important changes to our User Agreement

If you feel uncertain about anything, do not click on any links but got direct to the website using your browser and by typing in the location directly.

The main changes are:-

1. Fees and arrangements for cross border payments
2. PayPal buyer protection
3. Access to and provision of services
4. Amendments to PayPal privacy policies

The full document runs to around 9 pages in PDF form, so is fairly extensive

You do not need to do anything to accept the changes as they will automatically come into effect on Nov 01, 2010.

Should you decide you do not wish to accept them you can notify them before the above date to close your account (https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/?&cmd=_close-account) immediately without incurring any
additional charges.

The BT Hub, or similar type of call is a scam. It was discussed on here recently and was also mentioned in one of the Computer magazines. Do not under any circumstances proceed with the call.

I had the same one as Inspector Green Pen (except that mine said dear Karen in the desert, not dear Inspector Green Pen) which I took to be genuine because
a) it was addressed to me, and not 'pay pal user'.
b) It was informing me of updates and told me I didn't have to do anything.
Except.....that I clicked on the link to be taken to the policy agreements page to be able to read it!!

However a few days later I received 3 e.mails from finance companies/banks I don't belong to, and have never used. I binned them straight away.
But it has now got me thinking - was it pure coincidence that those others came in the few days following the Pay Pal one.


You're right - it IS a minefield out there.
It's too bad we have to be suspicious of everything now.

I am the same as you. I think you will find that you still have an 'account' with them, with a commercial relationship even if you only pay for things.
It is just that some of the t & c changes may not be applicable to us.

Personally with all these situations I make it a rule, be it, Adobe, Windows, etc, Paypal, bank or online retailer mails or pop ups, to close my browser (and perhaps restart the computer for good measure), then log on to the account / program providers website in the normal way to check the updates for changes to terms & conditions there.
