why is it that when my great grandperants came to this country from Italy they had to learn to speek this launguage, but people that come here now do not?

Maybe because they were willing to integrate whereas some of the new arrivals simply wish to continue their own culture at a new location.

The willingness of official bodies to provide leaflets in a dozen different languages so that there is no need to learn English does not help.

And the liberal intelligencia who harp on about "retaining links to roots" don't help either.

It's much the same when the Brits emigrate to Spain/France etc but refuse to learn the language or mix with the local inhabitants/culture. Its all very sad as they end up loosing out.

Thank's for your reply, what you say is so true they did want to integrate as they wanted to live here.
I do think that everybody that come's here should learn to speek english, no matter who they are.
There is "retaining links to roots" they can do that, and still speek english. not just let thier kid's learn english in school and speek for then.

Janet, yes if anyone emigrates to any country they should learn the language, and it is thier loss if they don't mix with the people.
I think it should be compolsery to learn the language of any country that people emigrate to.

If you consider what the logical outcome of "A multicultural and multiracial society" actually means, it is "No to integration".

In other words you can come here and carry on in your old ways, but keep to your own kind and don't try to marry the natives.
