I have been searching for my grandmas birth family for a few years now and ordered a certificate which I felt could be her birth which I recieved today and am still hopeful its the correct one.
In the space to the right of the box thats headed Name entered after registration it says adopted and what appears to be a signature of a registrar.

Is it normal for adopte to be written on the birth certificate?

Yes i have seen this before. depends what was the norm at the time. On later adoptions you cant get a full birth cert for a child that was later adopted, the page nos on the GRO ref will have a small"s" against it denoting that only a small cert will be supplied which doesnt give details of the parent/s

Thankyou. I now have her adoption certificate and what I believe is her birth certificate but did not realise she was adopted at birth and that they wrote people were adopted on the birth certificates.

Thankyou

I ordered her adopition certificate a few years ago and have not been sure what to do with it. My Aunt & dad thought she was adopted by an aunt and uncle so ordered her adopted parents wedding certificate and have been building up that part of the tree and found a baby girl registered in the same year and quater as my Gran who had the same surname as possiable aunts and uncles.
THe certificate came this morning and the date of birth matches my Grans.
I know I may be totally barking up the wrong tree here but as my Gran died 18 years ago she cant help so am hoping I am along the right lines.
