Hello
I have an ancestor who was in India in the 1800's. It appears that he was a police investigator, at least at the time of his daughters baptism in 1870. All I have is his name. Does anyone know how I can go about finding more with only this limited info?

thanks Chris, I originally found his daughter this way, with help from these boards, and somone else researching the family found her baptism record recording his job. Up to this point I'd assumed he was with the army. Problem now is I don't know if he was born in India or the UK, when he was born, and where he died. I'm not doing too well on my own with this branch of the family but I'm learning! Perhaps as a newcomer to this I should have concentrated on a branch of the family that stayed put!!!
Cheers

his name is John Stephens, thats all I know
She is Eliza Margaret Stephens born 1868 in India she married William Goodwin and went on to have kids in India, Ireland and England. I'm quite happy with her but her parents are a brickwall
Thanks

Sorry, for the delay, I keep losing internet connection. I've checked the transcript and against Eliza's parents names there is Emily Stephens. Unfortunately no maiden name. Thanks for you help with this, it is much appreciated.
