Hi

I have traced a relation in the 1881 census ... William Mckay was part of the crew on the Morning Star vessel. Unfortunatley his role in the crew is unclear due to the handwriting he was either an MB or NB. Can anyone tell me which would be correct and what his position on the vessel would have been.

cant see it to take a look, what year was he born. Its more likely its AB meaning able seaman . or ordinary seaman ,so just a crew member who would have duties specified to him by a senior crew member.
try googling able seaman

An Able Seaman (AB) is an unlicensed member of the deck department of a merchant ship. An AB may work as a watchstander, a day worker, or a combination of both
