Can anyone suggest somewhere to go for a few days at the end of September. It would need to be in the UK. We are on holiday and would like to get away but have run out of ideas of where to go. Anywhere a few hours drive from East Anglia would be good.

We thought about Scotland but it is about an eight or nine hour drive and for three days (max) it is a bit too much driving.

Beverley, how about Derbyshire, leasing a cottage on the Chatsworth Estate. Have done it and can recommend it.

That has certainly got me thinking. As we are not into self-catering, I have been looking at hotels. There is one at Burton-upon-Trent - can you tell me if that's central to a lot of good things? Chatsworth House and National Forest looks good so we would probably visit those.

Any advice would be welcome as we haven't been to that part of the country before.

Hi Beverley, Burton on Trent, is going abit south in Derbyshire, whereas Chatsworth is abit to the North, vearing towards Cheshire and Yorkshire. But if you wanted to be centralised to the Peak District, which is where Chatsworth is, Google ' hotels in Bakewell', a lovely little Derbyshire town on the edge of the Chatsworth Estate. The Rutland is very good, and was featured on Hotel Inspector the other week. The owner is a real hoot,a lovely character, and I can remember him when he was a solicitor in our town. But besides that, there are lovely hotels all around that area, where you can experience some lovely countryside views, and walking, if you are into that. Oh, and by the way, we have some lovely fresh food here, and some tip top chefs.

I suppose at the end of the day, if it is Derbyshire you do want, then just stick a pin in the map, then look for hotels accordingly.

When o.h. and I went to Liverpool in May 2009 for a meet, we were amazed at the whole place, lots to see and nice restaurants, and the other day Country Tracks programme showed stacks of info about that area - all about Liverpool and on up by Crosby and Southport to Blackpool and Morecambe. We had hoped to get a holiday there to go back and look round Liverpool more. The Albert Dock is very interesting with a Museum of Slavery, a Tate gallery and other things and both Cathedrals are wonderfully interesting places to visit. Of course there is the Beatles connection too and the Chinese quarter as well.

You might still be able to watch the programme as it was on tv a week ago Sunday.

We stayed at an hotel on the edge of the water just a short walk from the Albert Dock, called Campanile hotels, I think the address was Chaloner street. It was reasonably priced and very clean, the room was large enough and had a nice ensuite. Many places were within walking distance too so you didn't have to drive round the city. We drove from Norwich on a very hot Friday afternoon but the drive wasn't too bad at all and coming back was an easy ride on the Monday afternoon. It's around 250 miles from Norwich and takes around 4 hrs according to Mapquest.

Thanks for that. We actually went to Chester last year and went on the train to Liverpool while we were there. There is a lot to see but we only had a few hours. You're right - it looks a great place. We went into the museum and spent most of our time there. A bonus was that it was free entry.

We would like to get back up there again one day but are trying for somewhere we have't been before.

Morning Beverley, yes we want to go back and spend more time there, I had found a nice house in Southport to rent but they wanted £700 for a fortnight at the beg of October and o.h. doesn't want to drive that far or spend that much at the mo, having had all the recent expenses to do with his son's wedding. Also the days will be short so better to go when the evenings are lighter and we can see and do more.

I have family links to Liverpool and the Cathedral, not the Wigwam one, so must get back and see more of it. If you have time, look at the programme I mentioned if it's still available, it was really interesting and fascinating.

We had thought about York as we loved it when we went there years ago but will probably go back there when we can spend more than a couple of days. There is so much to do in York that we didn't get chance to do previously. Must admit never really explored the Yorkshire Dales though. Not sure if the weather will be good enough at the end of September. It's worth looking at though.
