How to found out why someone was a Lord

There is a Lord Herbert Gardner, but as far as I could read that has nothing to do with my one. The other one died in the 1920s I think it was and the title died with him as there was no sons. |

Yes that probably would help wouldnt it, he wasnt a lord in 1881 on the census but on the 1891 he was, his name is Lord Herbert Gardner, he married Kate Chettle in 1875 and the marriage certificate just had him as plain Herbert Gardner, his father was George Gardner, farmer, he was a grocer. |

I did google it brought up someone that wasnt him, does this mean he used the title unlawfully? |

I have come across someone in my ancestry who is a Lord, he didnt use the title for his marriage, but his death certificate classes him as a Lord, the 1891 census classes him as a Lord but not the 1881 or previous ones. How can I find out how he got this honour? |
