Yes, there are several variations, and indications that they travel in families. ;)

I do think the name is

ARCIS

pronounced and sometimes written as

ARCHUS

and in some cases it was passed down as

ARCIS ADELA

which became

ARCHISIDELLA

and variants of that.

Is this the older woman, in 1871?

Thomas Brooks 28
Ellen Brooks 26
William H Brooks 6
Sarah A Brooks 2
Joseph Brooks 1 Month
Mary Brooks 1 Month
Archus Brooks 74 - female, widowed, boarder - that's what it looks like, "Archus"

But those can't be the younger one's parents.

Do you have your woman's actual birth record? I can't see anything resembling, or her marriage, or see her in other censuses, or see or a death record for the older one.

A couple of other variants in censuses:

Name: Arcissadella Morris
Birth: abt 1882 - Worfield, Shropshire, England
Residence: 1891 - Rindleford, Worfield, Shropshire, England

Name: Archisadella Whitmore
Birth: abt 1883 - Gnosall, Staffordshire, England
Residence: 1891 - Audlem, Audlem, Cheshire, England

Name: Arcisadella England
Spouse: Joseph England
Birth: abt 1858 - Shirlett, Shropshire, England
Residence: 1881 - Church Gresley, Derbyshire, England

I wonder ... could there be some church Latin here? The "ci" pronounced "chi" and then written that way?

This is from a typed version of the GRO index that would have come from a handwritten list, I think, and could be a mistranscription of Arcisadella:

Name: Arcis Adella Davies
Year of Registration: 1879
Quarter of Registration: Oct-Nov-Dec
District: Burton Upon Trent
County: Derbyshire, Staffordshire
Volume: 6b
Page: 536

Or the names could be a combination of Arcis and Adela, possibly all named for the one ancestor.

That could explain "Archus", i.e. Arcis.

Aha, the birth record of Arcisadella Morris from the census:

Arcis Adela Morris 1881 Apr-May-Jun Shropshire

And there's also this birth:

Arcis Adella Leech 1894 Oct-Nov-Dec Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire, Yorkshire - West Riding

There are several female "Archus"s in censuses. ("Archis"s are pretty obviously mistranscriptions for Archie.) They're all in Staffordshire, including another one where your woman came from:

Name: Archus Lander
Birth: abt 1805 - Brownhill, Staffordshire, England
Residence: 1861 - Ogley Hay, Staffordshire, England

And there are these deaths:

Archus Parker abt 1850 1907 Cannock Staffordshire

Archus Richardson abt 1829 1891 Wolverhampton Shropshire, Staffordshire, West Midlands

and this marriage, possibly of a descendant of the Hicken mentioned earlier:

Archus Hicken 1882 Cannock Staffordshire

And in a census:

Name: Arciss A M Smith
Birth: abt 1879 - Broseley, Shropshire, England
Residence: 1891 - Broseley, Broseley, Shropshire, England

whose birth is mistranscribed (but has been corrected at FreeBMD) as:

Arcia [Arcis] Amelia M Smith 1878 Oct-Nov-Dec Shropshire

I do think that's the answer. ;)

Incidentally, if you put Archisidella in Google ...... it raises 2 references

one of which is this thread!

I entered Arch?s?d?ll? on ancestry ...... and there's quite a few of them around.

The earliest I found was a reference on a Public Family Tree to an Archisadella Hicken married 13 May 1759 - Morville, Shropshire
Spouse: John Langford

it's an interesting name, that's for sure!

No other clues. She married a miner and her name was Brookes before marriage. I have now discovered other women with the name (different spellings) spead over the West Midlands area where she lived and wonder if they might be connected. One is an Archisadella Deakin whose name I found in an article from a Shropshire newspaper about a woman convicted of stealing turnips. I'm told Deakin is a gypsy name.

Thanks for your reply

I have hoardes of gypsies in my tree but dont recognise the name, it may be slightly mistranscribed? Or made up? Have you got access to the 1911 census? Other clues to gypsy heritage are occupations, gypsy surnames, and where/how they were living.

Thank you everyone. I tried Googling the name but only came up with an Indian male name, Archis.

The lady in my family was born in 1867 in Lichfield area of the west midlands. One census record has an elderly lady boarding at her parents house with the same name and surname, Archesidella Brookes.

Thanks, Sat Nav. I wondered if it had gypsy connections as there was supposedly some family involvement with a travelling circus.

Thank you, everyone.

I think that is more likely an inability to spell.

In my family there are two women whose forenames are Archesidella. Has anyone ever heard / seen that name before? I have a suspicion it may be a gyspy name. I can't find out its origin.

Any suggestions welcome.
