My late Dad would be 100 today had he beaten the lung cancer that took him from us at the age of 79.

What a celebration we would have had, wonder how cranky he would have become lol

Miss you Dad, wish you were around for my lad who you adored, and wish I could tell you all the things I have found out about your side of the family, and ask you about the people I can't track down. You were a strict Dad but your heart was in the right place and you did your best for all the family. Thanks.

We do indeed Dutch, my dad passed 33 years ago and I still miss him terribly and think of him every day, I often feel him around me expecially when I'm down and upset.

Thanks all, it's strange how you never think of your Dad or Mum for that matter, as a person, they are just Dad and Mum.
It must have been hard for my Dad to have to live his life in Norwich as he was a country boy, born just outside Buckingham in Bucks. His Mum, favourite sister and his other sister lived in that area, as did two of his brothers and their families but altho they went to live there when they married, my Mum and Gran didn't get on and Mum missed her family so they moved back to Norwich. They met in Norfolk when Dad was on demob in the village where Mum was a Landgirl. Dad didn't get back 'home' very often as we were never very well off and didn't have a car, so now and then Dad would go back and stay with his Mum for a few days, travelling mostly by coach. We did all go and stay with an aunt there when I was 13 and my brothers younger and Mum went then and in later years Mum and Dad went more often to stay with the favourite sis. A few times Gran came to stay with us, sometimes in a wooden bungalow in the sand dunes at Hemsby on the Norfolk coast, in fact I went there on Sunday last. Still some of the wooden bungalows left but I can't remember which one we used if it is still standing. A lot of them got burned by vandals over the years.

As I do Dad's family tree I wonder how he felt about being away from his family and how life would have been had we lived in Bucks instead of Norfolk. After all he had only just returned from serving his country during the war and had been to India, Burma, Palestine and such so had probably expected to go back home and settle down there. I have a feeling from things I heard that he was sort of expected to marry a woman from the village, coincidentally with the same Christian name as Mum, so that probably didn't go down too well with my Gran lol

Oh well, I will never know the answers now
Once again Dad, thanks for everything, you were a worker that's for sure and made sure we never went hungry.

My Dad's situation was brought back to me yesterday. An ambulance turned up next door to take the neighbour into hospital, at least I hope he is in hospital and not in a funeral parlour. I didn't like to go out and ask when his son brought the stepmum home. Neighbour has had chest infections on and off for ages and last week was ill again, so he and his wife, (both a bit younger than me but retired early on redundancy pay) had to cancel their holiday to Majorca, they should have gone on the 14th for two weeks. Both of them were smokers and then he gave up but she continued, she finally gave up smoking about a year or so ago.

My Dad was constantly diagnosed as having chest infections for two years, he was a smoker and a lot older than the people next door but when the doctor finally sent Dad for an xray it was found he had lung cancer and too advanced to do much about it. He only lived for 6 months and died when my son was 7. The neighbour has a little grandson of 5 who has spent a lot of time next door while his parents worked, even now he is at school he is usually round here several times a week after school and during the holidays they took him out and about and he helped his Grandad in the garden. He will miss him so much - I do hope C. will be ok and home again soon but just have this feeling of foreboding.
