How about starting a thread which gives freedom to ancient folk like me [69 yrs.]allowing us to have a great time moaning about this and that. I personally can`t accept the way folk hold their knife when dining, the knife is for cutting not for blinkingwell writing! Also what about the use of the words `absolutely`and `basically` by,of all people, BBC reporters. Did none of these people go to a school `what taught them how to speak proper?`

Oh well here is something that really really gets right up my nose.........its when people (incuding news readers, radio broadcasters and the like!!) pronounce the letter "H" as "Haitch" instead of "Aitch!" I dont know why but it really gets me going!!

Susan I always thought that was the unposh trying to be posh or the posh taking the 'p'

Some of we southerners on the essex/suffolk border sound a bit like the worzels on a good day. on others its like the cast of eastenders(It is in our neck of the woods anyway)!

lol Susan and Teresa I maybe a 'northerner' yorkie born and bred actually Derbyshire bred and born but close enough to Sheff to be a yorkie, but lived devon and cornwall also Glos plus ofcourse my years in London and then Sussex. OH is a Londoner but sound sufern with refinement ( that means Croydon way)

I have to say I discovered so many different ways of speaking in my travels as a young 'un but OH still says stick me near northerners and he loses me.

The schoolbag/homework is the 12 year olds although I have been on that grump for many years, one left 6th form as the other started Comprehensive. Years and years of homework nagging:)

My Dad was irish and although he left Ireland age 20 and lived in England for 69 years he kept his accent. My Mum was a londoner Battersea way and came down here after being bombed in the war. She never spoke like we do being born and bred in these parts
