Well, now, hasn't this coalition government got itself into a muddle?

You'd expect this lot to be anti-immigration.

Shame that the Tory's friend in the shape of business don't agree

"The temporary immigration cap has been a disaster for UK employers. The likes of Price Waterhouse (PWC) and Baroness Valentine of London First insist the cap has been hugely damaging for UK business - effectively tying one hand behind their back as they try to get out of recession."

There is even dissent amongst government ranks with business secretary Vince Cable openly criticising the immigration cap. Some might say that the 'quota system' on non-EU staff is nothing short of naked racism.


Either way companies such as PWC are suffering because of the cap - essentially the company has not been given enough permits to cover its staff. A spokeswoman for the company insisted the quota was calculated when companies were not recruiting so the number is completely out of kilter with today's staffing requirements.

This'll cause the Daily Mail to have a moral dilemma. Support the coalition or support immigration capping? Which one will sell more papers in the leafy suburbs of Middle England, then?

I know you're not as close to UK politics as me, Janey - but it will be so interesting to see this coalition fall apart.

For my money, it'll be the battle between Vince Cable and the Eric "Britain is being overrun by streetsigns" Pickles that will eventually test the coalescence of this coalition.

The unfortunately-named Pickles has devoted his first few weeks in office to such major matters as ....... street parties.

"Communities Secretary Eric Pickles has succeeded in his quest to ban the reams of forms, high costs and red tape getting in the way of communities organising street parties and summer fetes.

From now on, instead of organisers being met with endless, confusing guidelines on food licences, road closures and insurance - councils can ask street party organisers to complete one simple form. "

Phew, that'll be a relief, then.

Sadly, said Pickles is also the conservative party chairman.

That was the kind of news I meant. ;)

We're coming up to municipal elections here in Ontario. For some reason, a few years ago, they were standardized across the province at every four years. We were used to shorter than that. Toronto is shaping up to be won by one of the foulest right-wingers you can imagine. The other candiates, centre to left, are unfortunately fixing to split the vote. The Liberal will undoubtedly refuse to bow out. Don't know about the NDPer, who is of course the best one ...

It was your tale of street parties that made me think of that. Over here, that's the domain of municipal councils. ;)

The best way to keep people's minds off what really matters is to introduce trivia that "matters" to them. A la "fox savages young child" or somesuch twaddle

Or perhaps Sarah Palin's daughter's exploits......
