okay why do you think that

There is no proof that Marie ever said 'let them eat cake ( brioche) ' however I think she was typical of her class in that if you are born into aristocracy, you're really not going to be aware of what your subjects go through ( certainly not then if now).

From what I remember I would say she had a really 'bad press', did not get a fair trial, and was like many during the revolution a scapegoat for political forces beyond control. Wrong class, wrong place, wrong time.

It's just on anecdotal evidence that Marie Antoinette has gone down in history as the queen who said, 'Let them eat brioche', when told that the peasants had no bread.

Interestingly, she was convicted of treason, when beheaded nearly a year after her husband's own execution.

Sorry RR, I should read other people's posts again, before I write my answer!

but wasn't she just a child married out of her own country, to a husband she didn't know, used by family and spoilt by loved ones then hounded for being foreign

Misunderstood, on the outside she seemed a t@rt but inside a child screaming to get out. Rose is right there is no solid proof of her saying "let them eat cake" but I do admire the fact that it could have been said.
