GRO BMD project DOVE / D&I canned again

The ill fated GRO BMD scanning and indexing project has been canned again. Possibly / probably.

Project DOVE was to scan and re-index the BMD records as the current index contains errors and certain data, such as mother's maiden name and age at death, were only included in the index after a certain date. This project failed in 2008.

A new project was launched called the D&I project and wasn't due to start until 2011 anyway but this has now been suspended until the government spending review is complete.

To be expected.

However, the project didn't fail as such, it was a case of the budget running out, and was put on hold, as in the light of the worsening economic situation, further funding was not available. I understand that it was more than 50% completed at the time it was suspended and that the work completed so far will not be lost.

The other issue that needs to be addressed is that a change in the law will be required before the it could ever be implemented. I get the impression this might have been overlooked at the time the original project was kicked off.
