Just adding that every two weeks, you will received a list of "Hot Matches" from GR. Every name in your tree which is in another person's tree, will give you the name of the ancestor plus the year and place of birth. Whilst the name and year of birth will be the same as in your tree, the place of birth cannot be matched by the computer and it may or may not be the same as in your tree. If it is not relevant to your tree, just delete it, but make sure you really don't need it because my own grandfather thought he was born in the house where he grew up in Australia - until his older sister told him he was born in Durham. He thought his parents had emigrated before any of the children were born.

Also, I would advise you to set your privacy so that living relatives will not be visible to others looking at your tree.

after you have opened YOUR tree, there is a box to the right at the top(ish) of the page, saying "other trees."
any ones name in there, gives you access to any of those trees,

Bob

(or have I read the request wrongly?)

If I do find new information in someone's tree, I ask permission by saying "unless you object I should like to add (whatever I've found)" and wait a while for them to object. When I do add names I do put the source - e.g. Free BMD or 1871 census. If the other person hasn't given an official source, I say that the source is from X's tree, to show that it isn't yet verified.

...and following on from what Kay has said, the other good reason NOT to copy from anyone else's tree is that they may have got it wrong!

Not everyone researches to the same extent, and at least in my own case my tree on here is just a 'guideline' for me , I haven't put much exact detail on it as yet ( that's all on paper).

Don't forget too make full use of any free sites, lots of tips for that on the Tips and Records boards, the following two being invaluable,

Hi Lynn,

If you do get permission to view any trees,,,,,,what ever you do *dont* C&P any details from it.! they call it stealing on here.!! and your name will be slammered..

just ask what info your'e allowed to copy,if they do have names of people who are living dont copy to your tree for same reasons as above.
And that also applies in your own tree.

Happy Hunting.

Hi Rose,
Thank you so much for the information. I will do as you suggest. Ive not heard of FMP so will have a look at how that works. Many thanks again... im now off on my quest :)

Hi Lynn,
Yes you do have to contact members and request to view their tree, unlike Ancestry where as a full member you can view public trees.
I must say I find Ancestry a bit better for just getting information, but there is much more of a community feel on Genes and you will find people on the boards are very helpful if you have a problem.
Good luck,
Mayfield.

Hi Lynn, yes you do have to ask the tree owners permission to view their tree, there is a lot of 'groundwork' you can do first though, if you are looking for someone.

For example you might find that 10 people have a Rose Jones in their tree, if you have first found her on the census and freebmd you should have a birth year and location, that may help eliminate some of those tree matches.

Re being a Standard member, that's what a lot of people choose, GR does not hold the census' just redirects you to Ancestry etc. It is worth taking a two week trial on Ancestry to see if you find it easier for searching ( it does have benefits...probably most here are signed to it or FMP but keep the standard here also)

The wealth of experience here is great and people are very helpful.

Hi, I joined as a standard member to see if i like the site or not. Im trying to look at possible links in others trees but cant. Do I always have to seek permission from the owner? Any help would be soooooooo much appreciated! Thanks! :)
