Ex - batts ladies guarantee a slug and snail free veggie patch.

I was brought up having chickens in the garden with other animals at home, rabbits, pigeons, dog, budgies, and would happily have some if I lived in the right place, nowhere here to have any sadly.

nudge again. Chickens make nice pets, and they dont need a walk, manure is good for garden too, surplus eggs can be used on the dogs plate, or the cats, and added to mashed potato make a nourishing dish.

...Gently nudging the ex batt ladies off my brocolli. Again.

Can we keep this nudged between us please, it might inspire others to take in rescue chooks from all areas.

Hi, I have rescued hens from the Battery Hen Welfare Trust, Kent branch, (check out their website for pics and items for sale) and the chooks are very happy pecking around the wood and laying eggs for me. They are also quite tame!

How I wish i could take some, but dont live anywhere that I can have them. Nudge for those who do, they dont take a lot of looking after and do repay with eggs. They can be company in the garden too.

My ex-batts are laying far more eggs than we've ever needed, we give them away to neighbours, friends and even the postie takes a box when we see him.
We've got some nice fat goosie girls too (soon be chrismas) and they are absolutely brilliant for keeping moggies and foxes away from the garden.

Homes are needed for thousands of rescued hens
Volunteers who have saved thousands of hens from caged farms are trying to find homes for the animals around Norfolk.

Little Hen Rescue, which is based in Flordon, near Long Stratton, rescues and rehomes ex-laying hens from intensive farms all over the east of England.

The group currently needs to find homes for 800 ex-battery hens and there are a further 5,000 waiting to be collected.

Jo Eglen, founder of Little Hen Rescue, said: “We only have until November to collect the others that are still sitting in their cages with their jail mates waiting for the chance to feel the sunshine, and spread their wings.

“I currently cannot take anymore in because feeding 800 hens is crippling to us, as we run on donations that are asked for the hens that are rehomed, and a small amount of stock that we sell on rehoming days.”

The hens are generally about 70 weeks old and are all bought at slaughter price by the group and then collected and taken to Flordon.
