Dont forget they could have been the result of an earlier marriage and perhaps the first wife has died.

Alternatively they could be illegitimate, sometimes with my Scottish ancestors they have been christened with both surnames even though the parents hasn't married yet.

Also there's been cases where they were christened with their morher's surname but changed their name later with a deed of paternity.

I have a marrage date for ancestors in 1874 and on 1891 census it says that their eldest child was born in 1871.
Is this just an error or were children if born out of wedlock still registered in fathers surname?

PS I do not have certs for the ancestors, just info from census and free bmd.
