and he operated close to where I live
In fact one of his last pick-ups was attempted just about 4 blocks from my home
He was under 24 hour surveillance during the last couple of weeks or so before they could arrest him. The car following him, saw him demonstrate interest in a young teenaged girl walking on the street, then saw him make a right turn off that main road ...... decided he was doing a circle round back to the girl
what to do?
they decided to compromise the surveillance operation ............... jumped out of their car, scooped up the young girl and ran her along the street half a block to a fire hall that was then on that road ........ and handed her over to the firemen.
and saw Olson retracing his route
A day or so later, he escaped their surveillance again ...... and killed again.
I still feel bad sometimes ......... one of his last pickups was a 7 year old boy who lived in the city of Richmond, just across the river from us. The boy was first reported missing, wandered away, etc etc ...... and I made my then-7 year old daughter come and watch the news item. I said "This is why we always want to know where you are going, 'cos mummies and daddies get really upset when children don't that and seem to be missing" It's because we love you"
'Course it turned out a few days later that the boy had been assaulted and killed.
I sometimes wonder whether I scared J too much!
He was really unusual in a child predator in that his victims were both male and female, and the age range was 7 to 15 or 16
I'm still glad though that the police paid him the $100,000 to show them where the 10 bodies were ........ blood money, yes, but at least those parents have got closure. The other parents haven't.
EDIT:- ....... should have made clear they didn't pay "him", the money went to his wife and child.

Well yes, Sylvia, but I wasn't searching for the phrase
"clifford mcleod chatsworth ontario"
Siiggggh. ;)
I guess I could have made it
"clifford" mcleod chatsworth ontario
but yeesh, having to have a workaround to use google, there's a pain.
Maybe if I triple-spaced it ...
Hahahahahaha.
Yeah, Stray, one of our least pleasant fellow Canadians. The law that prohibits convicted offenders from profiting from writing about their exploits was written especially for him.

errrrrrrrrrrrrr
dare I say this?
I have google.ca .................. of course I do!!
With the Flintstones yet!
I tried your Clifford McLeod Chatsworth Ontario to see what I would get
I did NOT get any helpful tips, such as Clifford Olson (ugh, nasty nasty man!)
it let me carry on merrily typing McLeod etc
AHA!
if I type Clifford .......... I get the drop down list headlined (?) by Clifford Olson
If however I type "clifford mcleod chatsworth ontario" ........ NO drop down list.
and it doesn't matter if I use all lower case or caps at start of words.
sooooooooooooooooooo
just use " " around one or more words.
walks away, whistling

I'm green.
Now I just need you to get a probe and load it with that version of .ca and send it through the wormhole ...
I'll guarantee it won't be working for you by the weekend, though!
Meanwhile, I'm going with the NoScript option.

Right. No more eliminating autocomplete showing for you at .com and .co.uk.
I'm positive that when you see this
Autocomplete Provide query predictions in the search box. Do not provide query predictions in the search box.
at .ca it's because you're getting a cached version and not today's updated version.
What happens when you select "do not provide" at .ca and then do a search??
I'll be needing to pay you for your time. ;) I'm just curious -- it's like talking to somebody through a time machine!

Fun with Google Instant:
http://www.ctv.ca/CTVNews/SciTech/20100930/google-blacklist-100930/
... But there are certain words that Google won't help users spell. A publication aimed at hackers called 2600 Magazine has already compiled a list of such words. It's several hundred entries long.
Some seem innocuous but could lead to adult pages, like "amateur," while others are blocked because they're associated with hate speech or other offensive content.
Although some have claimed that Google Instant's list of bad words is a form of censorship, users can still search for the subjects by typing them in themselves.
Google Instant's product manager, Toronto native Jonathan Effrat, said the list of words isn't new and is based on search data that points to objectionable content. He noted there are cases in which some words are blocked without merit.
Google won't help you spell out Barenaked Ladies, even if you're just searching for the Canadian band. You'll get help searching for Pamela, but not Pamela Anderson.
Along with some self-serving crud about how Google is working to save people time blah blah.
Yeah, that's why it now (since its last round of "improvements") makes me wait until I have a batch of search results already before I can "select pages in Canada", instead of doing it before I search ...

I wonder ... since this did happen literally only about an hour ago at google.ca ...
You are probably getting a cached version of google.ca from a local server, not the brand new one being fed to us here now.
Try google.com for me and see whether it's still there in Account Settings for you?

Now how did you get that??
That's the option we *used* to have, that has been taken away now, and that's exactly what all the fuss is about! It ain't there in my Search Settings anymore!
What magic do you wreak??

That's Instant Search, which isn't the same as Autocomplete, unfortunately.
Instant Search gives you *search results* as you type. (I'm not even going to try that one, yech.) And you can only have a total of 10 results per page -- I go for 30 results per page, to save time and have greater choice.
Autocomplete tries to fill in your search box for you as you type what you're looking for. You get a drop-down list of options that you can click on.
For instance, how I got hit by this -- I was typing
Clifford
intending to type
Clifford McLeod Chatsworth Ontario
in connection with a request on TTF. As soon as I got halfway through "Clifford", google started offering me Clifford Olson, one of Canada's most notorious serial killers. As I continued, google gave up, since it had never heard of Clifford Olson (oops, I meant McLeod), but having all that stuff dancing around at me, just hellaciously annoying, it is.
I know some people like that stuff, of course.
But the consensus of opinion seems to be that google is doing this, and particularly instant search, so there's a greater chance of you getting results that include advertising google is paid for ...

next to my search box there is an option to turn the instant search off, & just get your results hitting enter
Edit
scrap that, yours is different to ours DOH !
Just took a look at your CA site Go to your top right hand corner & you will see - search settings.
Click & scroll down to
"Do not provide query predictions in the search box."
save
It worked for me :o)) no predictive text as you search

I use google.ca (I need to be able to find things on pages in Canada specifically) -- I imagine most here use google.co.uk.
I had a special present from google this afternoon that I expect you have had for some time. They seem to have been complaining about it in the US for a couple of weeks. It just hit me today.
And what is this of which I whine?
AUTOCOMPLETE.
I know some people like it. When you start typing in the search box, Google helpfully completes your sentence for you, almost all of the time with something of completely no interest to you. It is distracting, annoying and infuriating.
(The Search Trees thing here at GR does it too, for names. I'd got rid of that a long time ago, and it has come back, and I have to figure out how to rid myself of it again now.)
If you really really can't type, and if you're really really lucky and google "suggests" what you really want, you can use your mouse to click on its suggestion. For the rest of us, it's just yet another stupid, useless interference.
So, there are solutions.
Instead of the regular google page
http://www.google.co.uk
for example, use this:
http://www.google.co.uk/webhp?complete=0
If you have google as your home page, as I do, because of the enormous amount of searching I have to do in a day for work, that's an easy fix.
The other option -- at least if you're using Firefox and have NoScript installed -- is to use NoScript to "forbid google.co.uk" or whatever google you use, when you are on the google main search page.
I found these suggestions in a google "help" forum where there are many pages of people complaining about the fact that we can no longer turn off AUTOCOMPLETE, and helpful google people telling everybody how helpful it is ...
Hope these ideas for getting rid of it are helpful to somebody!
