We still use a local butcher, but also supermarket shop as I cant walk all round the town. We have basic Skye, and find ourselves watching the old programmes that are reshown, because the modern stuff is mostly requiring little attention span and has no story. When we had fewer channels, the money was spent on making quality programmes, and if it didnt appeal, there was always something on Radio.

Yes we have too much choice. My OH collects DVD's which as spoilt my enjoyment of watching films when they come on the box because I can watch them anytime as we most probably have a copy which has been catalogued and placed in alphabetical order on the bookshelves. We don't have wallpaper we have floor to ceiling DVD's and now he has started on BlueRay Arggggggh

I no longer shop in the supermarket. I used to do Tesco online but I no longer do this either. I shop at the local shops and guess what ?

I have discovered that my weekly shop is cheaper than even Asda. I have a friendly person who is only too happy to help me and have a chat. It is an all round better service.

I too enjoy Coast, and we also like Countryfile.
But I do also watch Emmerdale, Corrie and East Enders
I like Midsummer Murders, Lewis (and one I can't remember the tirle at this moment on BBC)
I enjoy strictly and sort of enjoy X Factor (if only to criticize!).
When I am here consistently I watch Masterchef. (not a lot of point if you don't see them all).
I did watch Heartbeat (has it actually finished? I saw one recorded while I was away last night.

Other than the above I am usually on here.

We don't have Sky, I wouldn't want to put a single penny in Murdoch's pockets, but we do have Freeview and I really enjoy a lot of the programmes on BBC 3 and BBC 4.

I'm really enjoying Michael Wood's Story of England and the War Walks series.

Autumn Watch will soon be back on BBC2, which I really enjoy. I can watch Coast again and again, and Time Team.

I don't watch Soaps or Reality programmes but there is plenty of other choice as long as you look - and have Freeview.

We now have a tele with freesat ....loads of channels loads of programmes and nothing really to watch. Yes I did say it was better when there was only a few channels

I hate supermarkets on the whole, but do use them, although I also use farm and local shops for meat, bread, fish etc. We would be much 'poorer' if we did not have the choice of the small outlets. Supermarkets are keen to promote the fact that they 'give us what we want' but really it's the other way round - they sell us what THEY want to sell!

AnninGlos

AnninGlos Report 6 Oct 2010 10:42

Is that 'need' or 'want' Stray? If the choice wasn't there would you be better off?

ONE GOOD THING ABOUT SUPERMARKETS IS THAT
YOU CHOOSE YOUR OWN FRUIT AND VEG,YEARS AGO YOU JUST ASKED AND TOOK WHAT YOU WERE GIVEN THE TIMES THE POTOTOES WERE ROTTON ALL THROUGH,
AS FOR SKY WE CHANGEDD TO A BASIC PACKAGE AND GET THE INTERNET VERY VERY CHEAP

AnninGlos

AnninGlos Report 6 Oct 2010 10:24

We solved the Sky problem by cancelling it, never anything decent to watch all that was watched in this house was sport by OH.

I agree with you re small shops and supermarkets but when I think back to shopping in the sixties, we did have a small type of supermarket (Coop) but, as you say the choice of food was limited so we spent less probably. However, our diet was also limited. I like it now that I can buy the ingredients to make all sorts of foreign dishes. If we only had small shops we wouldn't have that choice and sometimes choice is good. (that is awfully muddled thinking but I know what I mean.)
Sometimes choice is good and saves money. If you only had one clothes shop, one shoe shop would you pay less for clothes and shoes, I don't think so, they would have a monopoly and could charge what they like.

Do we have too much choices in our daily lives ?

Just sat flicking through 100's of sky channels but still couldn't find anything to watch.

I feel we appreciated telly more when we had little choice compared to now.

As for shops, in the old days we had grocers, butchers & small shops where we were served from behind a counter.
Our weekly shop would have been far cheaper as we would have just bought what we needed.

Nowadays we go into tesco's for a loaf & a pint of milk: & end up being tempted by the immense variety of goods on show to over spend & often over indulge..

What are your views ?
