A sign warning of falling conkers has been put on a horse chestnut tree by health and safety bosses.

The sign reads: 'Beware Falling Conkers' and advises passers-by to 'proceed with care'.

It came after two visitors to Abbey Gardens in Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk, were hit as they walked under the tree.

‘I think the whole thing’s daft,’ said one park user, while a Conservative minister also criticised the sign.

Local Government minister Bob Neill suggested council officials in Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk, were being 'excessive health and safety zealots'. He also suggested that the council had 'gone bonkers'.

I had one landed on the car last week,what a thud it made.
They are banned in playgrounds too as far as I know. Little fingers getting battered lol

Before I retired I used to sit near the facilities manager. Even he used to admit it had all got rather silly, especially after he was told to put a sign on the cleaners closet door which read

"This Door Must Be Kept Locked at All Times"

A few years ago I was walking with a friend and his grandson in a wood local to us when a conker dropped on my friend's head. ....Thinking about it now has me laughing, as the look on his face when he thought one of us had thrown a stone at him. When I stopped laughing I said that probably the squirrel, oops sorry tree rat, had probably singled him out. Whilst I think putting a notice up is one step too far, I mean whoever heard of a squirrel who could read?-JLe

The council in Nottingham have used there emloyees to knock all the conkers off of one tree because one fell on some ones head last year,what a waste,it is councils wasting our money again,councils going conker bonkers,they want to spend the money filling in the pot holes that are still about from last winter,but no they have no money to waste on such important things.

The playground of the junior school my 16 year old attended was surrounded by conker trees. At lunch time, at this time of year, the boys would throw their footballs up at the branches to try and dislodge the conkers. My friend was a playground supervisor and would often shin up the tree to retrieve the ball and throw down conkers to the children below.

Wouldn't happen now, she would have been "well sacked" for contravening H & S issues.

Well! They haven't put a notice warning of falling crab apples on the tree I walk under every day!!!
Perhaps it's because, once 'bonced', most people make a slight detour!!!
If you don't realise after the first 'hit' that a tree is shedding it's fruit, you probably wouldn't feel it anyway!!
