Thank you somerset and annielaurie. Both replies very helpful. I know now should have put the question somewhere else and also clears up a mini mystery.
My grandmother had a collection of bibles...one of them had my g.uncles inscription with his service number. Did not know until now that he did not make it! As family was from Wexford seems he had some time with family before passing...he was one of the 'lucky' ones in that respect.
Will now start finding out where/how it happened. Will be checking Irish guards activity summer 16.

DOW is died of wounds. There is a Joseph Carley of the Irish Guards who died on this date on Commonwealth War Graves as follows

CARLEY, JOSEPH
Initials: J
Nationality: United Kingdom
Rank: Private
Regiment/Service: Irish Guards
Unit Text: 2nd Bn.
Age: 23
Date of Death: 03/10/1916
Service No: 6380
Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead
Grave/Memorial Reference: Q. 80.
Cemetery: WEXFORD (ST. IBAR'S) CEMETERY

The reference numbers on the Medal card relate to the Medal Roll - not online but you can look it up at Kew. Probably the only additional info you would get from the Medal Roll is the battalion he served in, but the CWGC record above shows you that he was in 2nd Bn.

Have medal record for my great uncle , Joseph Carley, from WW1 and trying to work out what it is saying. Is there a guide anywhere on NA/here?

Half way down the card there are 3 main titles...MEDAL..ROLL PAGE.
This is followed by 3 rows titled Victory, British and Star.
After Victory handwritten is IG/106 B3....PAGE 298.
Before STAR numbers 15....after STAR IG/1B...PAGE25.

In remarks portion of the card ...letters D of W 3.10.16.

Before I venture down to Kew (again...on MI 12!!) would be grateful if anyone could help with interpreting this info.

Thanks
Paul
