If student loans only have to be repaid when the recipient of the loan is earning a certain amount of money, what happens if that student gains their degree and then promptly emigrates?
I'm assuming the inland revenue must be involved, somebody must be resonsible for the repayments "kicking in" at a certain point in time when the former student is earning a high enough salary. Therefore if that person is not earning a salary in England, when do repayments begin?

Good point, but dont know the answer. I dont agree with the high cost of higher education anyway... If we only educate the rich, we are definitely going the wrong way.

Here in NZ, we have the same issues. Our current Government is trying to tighten up the rules.
Our Student Loans are available to finance full time study, or a percentage for non full time study. They are interest free until you are working.
We also have a student allowance which is available to support living costs, available only to those who are less financial. It is not required to be paid back.
My daughter is nearly at the end of her studies and faces repaying a loan of over $40K NZ. It will take her a lot of years to be debt free. Repayment is automatic through her tax and is at a set rate.
Frustrating to think some abscond from the responsibility of repaying their tax payer funded loans...

M two sons are out there in NZ, Susan. The older one has a small business and the younger is paying his way through college in Hamilton.
I'm thinking that when my daughter leaves uni she should join her brothers in your beautiful, peaceful country.

Hi Eddieisagrandad,

I live about an hour south of Hamilton. I hope your sons are happy here in 'Godzone'.

Yes NZ is a great place to live. We have alot of the modern day ills ie: (in no particular order) teenage pregnancy, drug and alcohol abuse, unemployment, Hospital waiting lists, etc.

However, home is where the heart is, and mine is definately here. I am a first generation Kiwi and very proud to be so.
