Thanks folks, he too had a provisional licence for his scooter for some time, then it ran out and the scooter got stolen earlier this year when it was off the road parked on a special parking area that he pays for in his rent (by choice, it's right under his bedroom window so he thought it would be good to grab it before it goes to someone else in case he can ever afford a car, lol There aren't many spaces near his flat.) He did at least get some insurance money back but not as much as expected as he hadn't noticed the excess had been raised.

He has been asked to do a few more days work with the temp. inputting job, this coming Friday Sat and Sunday evenings, which means a second week of not going out on Saturday but he is committed to earning enough to get his computer sorted out, a carpet for his flat as he still has the old tatty one left by the previous tenant several years ago, and he can have some more lessons. He apparently had 3 and a half hours of driving the day before the test and presumably an hour beforehand.

He also works on a Saturday afternoon at a shoe shop in a local shopping mall and is doing some extra hours there as well sometime soon.

He is planning to have a couple of lessons a month till he feels more confident and will then take the theory test again as it will have run out and then book a test. Hopefully third time lucky, I took two goes at it but that was in the early 70s and much easier then.

I can't put him on my insurance as it's o.h.'s car and I am just a named driver so can't help him that way to get experience.

O.h. back to work today and again on Saturday, so only Friday to put up with him, and Sunday, and then it will be back to normal shifts. Haven't been anywhere except a d.i.y. store yesterday for stuff to do more work on the bathroom, which has been an ongoing project for almost 3 yrs lol.
The weather has been gloomy, damp and cold so no point going out, he is no company and I would only end up having drive back, even if we stopped for a meal out first.

Poor lad, what a shame. Still did better than me, I rode a motorcycle to work for 8/9 yrs, on a learners licence.

Awww, Liz.......I do feel for your son. It's seems to always be that those who try to help themselves often get knocked back.

Re his driving test.......most instructors tell you to have an hours lesson immediately before your test, I don't agree. I found that first hour of driving followed by the test is just too much concentration for most people, especially when you're already wound up and nervous anyway. How many of us experienced drivers can drive for up to 2 hours without a break - and that's without the nerves!

I found it better (and so did my son), to just drive to the nearest cafe to the test centre and stop for a coffee instead of driving around for an hour - I certainly felt better and more relaxed for it, then went for the test and passed without any problems.

Good luck to your son for his next attempt. :-))

The other day my lad signed up for some part time temping work from 6pm to 2pm for 5 days which would mean a bit of a boost to his bank account. He works full time and this is similar work, data inputting for various companies. He was told if he couldn't get to the office to sign up by 3pm he wouldn't be able to do it but someone dropped out so he got a call back.

However he had also booked up for several driving lessons as he managed to get a cancellation test date for Tuesday at 1pm. Seems there are no tests available till January unless cancellations happen and his theory test pass runs out at the end of October from last time he took lessons but failed his test.
He quickly asked for holiday time off on Thursday and Friday and Monday from his main job and had some lessons with a new tutor and car, but disappointingly he failed his test again. Seems the test is getting harder and harder as his tutor was sure he would pass, his nerves got the better of him tho and he made a couple of small mistakes again, not really the sort that could cause major accidents but mistakes never the less.

I feel so sorry for him, he hadn't told anyone he was doing the test but called me last evening to tell me he had failed. It's always one step forward, two back, poor lad. We chatted on the mobiles while he walked all the way back from the temp job, quite a hike about three miles or so but at least it meant we caught up on gossip and I knew he got home safely.
Love him to bits, wish he could have some good luck for a change
