Take a sample to your local garden centre. They should be able to help you or local library. The Plant and Flowers garden encyclopedia.

Still can't think what it could be, Puss. It's the berries that have got me foxed. Do let us know if you find out what it is. x

I'm with Libby,it sounds like a Hebe to me,they have a few varieties with flowers ranging from pink, blue and purple.

Let us know if you find out,I am curious now.

I have a feeling it may be Viburnum tinus. There are various cultivars, so have a google.

Agree with others, the first thing I thought of was a hebe. Is it evergreen. There are all sorts of these with different coloured flowers, that flower different times of year.
Unusual for this time of year tho., but things do seem a bit out of season now. So, possible.

I think it might be a skimmia? there are various colours and they do have berries after the flowering, I haven't had a hebe that did?

It sounds like Daphne Mesurium to me.

Have you ever found out the right name for the shrub?

AnninGlos

AnninGlos Report 18 Oct 2010 17:23

I am almost certain hebes don't have berries.

Skimmia certainly do, have the leaves started to go a bit reddish?

Wend

Wend Report 18 Oct 2010 19:23

You're right, Ann, hebes don't have berries. Female skimmias do, but not flowers at the same time. Viburnum tinus have flowers and berries at the same time at this time of year.
