Hi Everyone, sorry for the delay in getting back to you, and
thanks for all your help in choosing a name for the puppy, I gave daughter the list of names you had thought of, she had more or less decided to call her Nutmeg, but on seeing her and a photo of the father, (she's the image of her daddy) she's decide to call her Poppy. Poppy has settled in quite well, first encounter with our cat was the day she arrived home, they touched noses, cat was not happy with the yapping and quickly avoided the crate Poppy was in, but if Poppy's asleep, cat will come right up to the edge of the crate an look in. Cat has improved, at first she would come thro the kitchen door, go behind sofa and out of other door, then she got brave and walked in front of sofa to go thro to the hall, now she sits in the same room as Poppy, so we are progressing - slowly, Poppy on the other hand is desperate to make friends with cat, and we've had two occassions where Poppy has gone into the kitchen and jumped on the cats bed while cat was sleeping in it, cat just backed away. but will keep an eye on both of them.
We took Poppy to get her second jag at the vets, the staff were great with her and had her out of her basket within seconds of us walking in, making a fuss of her, the vet had her face washed more than once! giving her the jag was easy, next came the worming tablet, the vet had to call for assisance, my oh and me couldn't stop laughing, what a performance, it was only a small tablet , Poppy tried to lick it, chew it then decided she didn't like it, so it ended up on the table, vet went to get another one, assistance arrived, and she had to gently pin Poppy against the wall while the vet used what looked like a long pair of tweezers to pop the pill down Poppys throat. Not looking forward to Tuesday when she's due another worming tablet!
Apart from the early mornings which we find hard, everything's going reasonably well, she licks her dish clean (no need for washing up)! and enjoys playing especially with an old tea towel which she likes tugging with whoever's on the other end , then she has a mad five minutes where she runs around the room like a greyhound round the track. shoe laces are another favourite, as are slippers. we are having a few problems with the toilet training, but I'm sure we'll over come these, it's early days. Can't wait to take her out on the lead, but she's not keen on her collar at the moment. Daughter's home on weekends from Uni. so is able to look after Poppy while we recover, have to say Poppy is just adorable and wish we'd had a dog earlier in life.

I didnt catch your first naming thread ShellyRose but reading through Poppy sounds lovely. We dont have a dog but my friend does puppy walking for guide dogs for the blind and keeps and does basic training with a pup for a year until it goes for specilist training. I get to make a fuss of the guide dog pups instead.

You will have lots of fun with your Pup. We were new to this the same time last year. Never had a pup before and got loads of advice from good people on here. Daisy is now 1 and she has brought us no end of fun. She is a Lhasa Apso.
Don't stress too much about the toilet training as she will get the hang of it and accidents will happen. Just keep reminding her where you want her to go and give lots of praise when she does. Enjoy!

Little bit of bread and butter, pop pill on, fold over, give to Poppy and down the hatch. Nostress for pup or human!!

I used to roll pills in a cheese spread triangle for my dog and she loved them lol Cats used to get them tucked down the side of the mouth and then their throats stroked so they swallowed, I gently held their mouths closed while doing the stroking.
I miss having a dog but no chance while I live here, o.h. not into pets.

Just wanted to thank you all for the helpful advice you've given me for giving Poppy her worming tablet, and for toilet training, Poppy's getting lots of photos taken, and plenty of attention, our 10 year old cat is gradually coming around, sitting next to her, albeit with her back end towards her!

I use panacur worming cream.it comes in a syringe and is easily squirted into the back of the mouth.My pup doesn't seem to mind and it is supposed to be flavoured.
