I am trying to find out what happened to my GGG Grandfather John Walsh (Born 1836, Ireland) between 1873 - 1881. Here is the timeline I have for him at the moment.

In the 1861 Census he is at Colchester Army Garrison as a Private.

14th Jan 1864 he marries Emma Clark (Domestic Servant) in the Roman Catholic Church, Colchester holding the Rank of Corporal 44th Regiment of Foot (East Essex Regiment)

In 1865 Michael Walsh (My GG Grandfather) was Born in Colchester.
Around 1869 his Son Thomas was Born in Ireland.
Around 1872 his Son John was born in Chatham, Kent,
Around 1874 his son Francis was born in either Warley or Brentwood (Difference info given between 81/91 census).

In 1881 I have the 4 Brothers living in Liverpool with their mother Emma who is now a Widow.

Can anyone shed any light as to what may have happened to John Walsh, whether he died in the service or not ir if I can find any military service record for him.

When his son John got Married in 1903 (He himself being a Bandmaster 93rd Highlanders at Kneller Hall), his Father is down as being Sergeant Major 44th Regiment.

Any help would be grateful.

FindmyPast have the surviving Army discharge papers for this period so you could have a look for him there, although if he died in service there won't be any papers for him. You could also try the Army deaths which are on FindmyPast.

There will be other records (at the National Archives) which would enable you to follow his Army career.
