WHY are our water rates so dear
if oxfam can give water to a full village in Africa
for two pounds a week

why cant they supply mine for the same rates
in stead of us paying a fortune to British water companies

Well...no pun intended lol... in Africa it wouldn't be pumped into your house from a reservoir hundreds of miles away and wouldn't include treatment and recycling of sewage and all the repair to old pipes etc, it would come from a standpipe in the centre of town and you'd have to carry it in buckets :) Do you remember that in 1976 lol.

But i take your point Joy about the cost of it here. When I lived in Wales near the wettest place in the UK I paid more than family down south...until i had a water meter put in which halved it at a stroke :)

In N. Ireland they do not have water rates - all included in their rates - which ar a lot cheaper than over here.

Welcome to Devon - and by far the highest water costs in the country. SW water say it is because we are paying for half the country to come here on holiday and they all have to shower and take a dump.
Its nothing to do with shareholders at all apparently. Yeah right. The latest thing is they've even started to charge people that have their own well.

Homes were flooded near me and roads shut twice in as many weeks.
The old Victorian main pipes burst
I was going through it on the bus the first time, there was a huge fountain of water going up in the air,and we could see the water going into the houses.
It must have just happened,no police or anything there then. But saw it on the Tv later on

Chris, they want to be certain itis "potable" and safe to drink. And they don't want dirty water going down the drains. No matter that half of Devon still have septic tanks.

I'm so glad we don't have water meters in Scotland, but we do still have to pay for it.
If I had a meter, I would only wash my dishes once a day, and the washing machine would only be on twice a week lolol
Just as well I live alone then eh?

I do feel for all those people with big water rates. It must be annoying when you're actually subsidising other people.

Leith Lassie - when we first went on to a water meter some years ago with 3 adults resident and used the water as we had formerly used it - the bill halved in the first year.
