The science of genetics was against it because it was often the case that children of cousind who married were often displaying the worst characteritics of both , which also meant deformities and mental prblems. but it still happened as said, to keep money in the family.

Yes, theres nothing like keeping it in the family ( so to speak )..lol

My g,grandmothers father ( widowed), married my g,grandmothers, husbands, elder sister.
My then g,granparents had a son who married my g,grandmothers, fathers, daughter. ( cousins marrying )
This also meant....my g, grandfathers father in law, was also his brother in law.

This also meant my G,G,Grandfather was also my G,G,Grand uncle....lol

I love Family history

We lived next door to a couple married early 40s who had no children but evidently loved them - thought it just hadn't happened for them but at her funeral I found out that they were first cousins. It was often felt that first cousins marrying could produce a handicapped child etc.

My mother-in-law's cousin married a cousin (if you see what I mean!), but they decided not to have children for some reason. Nothing illegal and, in fact, even the Church approved!

Cousins often married.
It was quite legal.

HI, CAN ANYONE OUT THERE ADVISE ME IF COUSIN'S WERE ALLOWED TO MARRY IN ABOUT 1880'S IN THE UK? THEY WERE BOTH FROM WORKSOP AND I'M NOT SURE IF I HAVE SOMEHOW GONE WRONG WITH MY TREE OR IF THIS REALLY DID HAPPEN. DOES ANYONE ELSE HAVE THIS HAPPENING IN THEIR TREE?
