My bank rang me to say someone had been trying to use my card online.
It was an automated thing, and I just had to confirm if I had used my card at certain places and could confirm it.

I wouldn't give my details over the phone to anyone, unless I had called them.

Buying on the internet is actually a very safe way, but you need to have your wits about you and make sure who you know who you are dealing with and always ensure it is a secure payment site. Also make sure you are signed up for additional card security such as Verified with Visa, or the Mastercard equivalent.

You also have to be very careful in verifying callers purporting to be a Fraud Officer - as they could well be the fraudsters themselves trying to get hold of your details.

I had card details misused a few years back. The bank wrote to me first of all and we then communicated by phone after I had verified the details.

What was also interesting this was a card I hardly ever used, and had never used it for distance buying. I am convinced it was a "inside job" as it was around the time that staff in overseas call centres had been caught selling card details for money.
