A close friend's 18 year old nephew has just been killed in a car accident. I have an 18 year old son too; doesn't it make you worry for them? The poor family, I know them a little and feel so sorry for them.

Hello Helen...that is so sad!! Yes it makes us realise how prescious(sp) our families are.

Helen I am so sorry to hear the awful news of your Friends Nephew. My thoughts and prayers go out to the family.
I have a 19 year old Daughter who drives and a 17 year old nephew who has just passed his test.
It is a worry when they go out driving but you can only hope that they stick to the rules of the road. In many cases in accidents it is not allways the youngster who is to blame.

Thank-you Jude, Teresa and Izzy. I have three children on the road now and I never really worried about them before: I thought we helped them with lessons and car services etc and the rest was down to them. As it was with us 30 years ago.

As far as I know this young man was a passenger in a car on his way to work one morning when the car left the road.

Accidents are just that, but this is no comfort to his mum, dad and sisters.

Some of you may know that we lost a 17 year old nephew a couple of years ago, not a car accident, but an aneurism in his brain, so I know how my friend feels about her nephew. There is no explanation for the death of a youngster.

I'm very sorry to hear this Helen.I always worry about my 2 even though they are 24 and 27.I do fret when they go on a long journey and can't relax until I hear they have arrived safely.
His parents and friends will be devastated.My thoughts go out to them.

So very sad to hear of young lives lost, I worry constantly about my son being a passenger, he hasn't yet managed to pass his test so I have that added worry to come when he does, and gets a car. I used to be scared when he had a scooter.

Thank-you, Liz and Cath.I do wonder sometimes if youngsters are allowed on the road too young - but how else will they get experience?

I also tought that, at one stage the government was thinking of not allowing new drivers to take passengers until they had been driving your a year? Maybe I dreamed that.

Helen, I think some sort of restrictions should be in force for new very young drivers especially, who seem to show off as soon as they get behind a wheel even tho they have no experience at all. It should be law that they only drive low powered cars on a New Driver plate for a year or similar. At least my son has experience of riding his motorbike (a small one) and his scooter around.
Some youngsters get insured to drive their parents' high powered cars and go crazy.
Having said that, it isn't always their fault if there is an accident, lots of foreign lorry drivers and older people who don't take care too.

May this lad rest in peace and may his family find the strength to remember happier times and cope with this sad accident. I hope it will make his friends more careful so that his death isn't in vain.
