Digging away I learnt that an ancestor on my mothers side was baptised 26/8/1840 in Hoxton, Middlesex (East London) as George FIELD Brooks. His father was George Brooks b circa 1820, a lawyers clerk and his mother was Mary Ann. I have been wondering if the FIELD was his mothers nee name but I've trawled high and low and as yet haven;t found out what her nee name was. The baptism took place at St John the Baptist, Hoxton and the family lived at Cavendish Street, which may have been Bethnal Green. I know there are far cleverer people on here so plase don't all shout at me if I've been going about this the wrong way. Help appreciated.

Linsdey, I don't know if you recall getting this information for me on November 2nd. I've since found that all the children of George and Mary had Field following their christian names. George went on to become a solictor & some of the sons followed in this profession. A bit of a surprise as most of the family had more 'ordinary' jobs.
I've been trying to find out more about the Field family, Mary's aprents without much like. I can't help feeling that to add the name to all the children George may have been somewhat beholding to that line. I was working on the theory that George was a lawyers clerk initially to the Field family. Problem is I can't seem to break into that side of things and wondered if you had any ideas.
Sorry if I am a pest but I value your input and your superior expertise (yes, flattery but well deserved!) I thank you for your time.

oooo such praise ! I will have a look and hopefully the Field name will pop up ! As I recollect we found him in 41 as Clerk.

Edit, I,m not going to guess, there are several Marys all born around 1816 Shoreditch.at least 3

It might be worth comparing the childrens names with the Victorian naming pattern, but there are no wild parents 'names to give a lead.
