Julia I find it so sad the hardships that our folks in bygone
days went through, and with very little help.As you say
things were not spoken of as is to-day and sometimes blame was given to the wrong person. When I look through
some of my relatives lives I feel great empathy for them and wonder why some turned to the life they chose, what
strength they must have had in a lot of cases and what heartbreak.

Golden Girl, my grandmother was so tight lipped, you would think she was hiding a sin or something, but I suppose in those days, that's how they saw things.
As a curious child, I often remembered asking about her mother and father. She just said that her mother had died when grandmother was a child, and she was never talked about. Her father was, because he only died in 1950.
After gran died, an aunt told me that, infact her mother had not died, but run away from her husband and seven children. Years later, she made attempts to get back in the family circle, but the eldest daughter was having non of it. She had now become the lady of the house, and she was not having an erstwhile mother coming back to take her place.
Such a shame.
Even in more recent times, some distant cousins have told me that she died in the poorhouse, in the 1930's,but in the end, it was the eldest daughter who sorted out her effects. I suppose she was protecting the father.
Strange what times they lived in.

I think if we had the foresight years ago to
ask all the questions we are asking now what
a bonus it would be.

Echoing Marks reply, I wish I had started this when my Gran was alive, though well before computers were invented. If only I had been able to get her to open up, and write it down on paper.
