Frances I could name an handful of reasons why people join gr n its not always to share knowledge for me its not that at all. I keep my membership going so I can keep in touch with friends I have made on and off the boards and to me its well worth my tener for that. I sopped having a tree on here when I had had enough of "sharing knowledge" and (its not the majority but a significant number) found by doing this they were just taking and using my hard work without thanks and without needing it - to be blunt they were collecting names I had researched when really they didn't need them (ie C&P the whole tree instead of just their branch). I know there has been times when I (and others) have been brought low in life and this site has proved a great source of comfort and more often a distraction. I am responding to the part of your post "what the heck are they on the site for .." not the other bit. As I prefer to help as much as I can on here rather than opening up a tree.

Maybe it could seem rude to some when a thread is put up and people take the time to comment on it but the original poster doesnt come back to reply.

That proves what others have said as in cant always be around to answer.

When I was a free member, I could send and receive pm's. The rules may have changed. I'd check if I were you.

Earlier this year, I had a health setback and continued to use my computer, although not for long each time and I was continually irritable. Only recently, whilst cleaning up, I found two pm's unanswered from months back. I answered and apologised immediately. It's not something I would ever do had I been feeling better. I don't even remember getting the messages - but these things happen. You must allow for it - try again after a while, then give up as their account might not be active any longer.
GR would probably be able to tell you this.

Free members can reply to a message sent from a paying member,,,but not the other way round.

Whenever I see a thread like this, I scroll up!

My brother in law had his tree on here, my sister didn't know, I didn't know.
It was only 2 years after his death that I noticed it, and asked GR to remove it.
My sister has never been a member of GR.
If I hadn't been a member, and 'messing about' - I wouldn't have found it, and it would still be on here!
It was his tree - his side of the family, and neither of us had any names in common on our trees - neither of us had living people apart from our own names.

I'm not certain of this. But if the PMs were sent to free members. Then they can't reply, unless they pay the £9.95 for std membership.

The site is not necessarily for "sharing knowledge", no one has to if they don't want to!

Plenty of people sign up so they can do their own research using the census etc , NOT to get in touch with other people in, or researching, the same family.

You pays your money you can make your choice lol.
As has already been said, they may not be ignoring you as such, but have other things to do. That's if they are still on the site at all.

It is frustrating when you find what you think may be THE link, but be patient, it's possible they will return to their messages eventually :)

Don't you find it rude that when you send an email to someone who clearly has info you'd be interested only for them to not even have the courtesey to reply. What the heck are they on this site if they are not willing to share their knowledge? Grrr!
