Joan, several years ago o.h. kept saying he couldn't stay in touch with his sons easily (they lived a mile away with his ex) cos he was at work so much on shifts.
One birthday I bought him a cheap (£8 at the time) separate answering machine and he duly recorded his message and waited to hear all the times his sons tried to call him.
Had to laugh, I knew they hadn't been bothering to ring at all and the silence of the machine proved it lol It must be about 12 years ago now and the machine has been useful at times. Still very few calls for him tho, mostly for me lol

Told Oh about those two websites so he chatted to the caller for about 10 mins this morning - even got a tel no out of them a London 0203 one. They rang back again this pm but put the phone down when he told them he had passed the number on to Microsoft.

I had a caller on Sat, not one of these I think, but as the recipient of the call I was expected not only to admit to my name, but because of data protection I they also wanted the first line of my address. Pointed out they had called me not the other way round and that they hadn't proved who they were. Told them I never gave out my address to cold callers however much I believed they were genuine!

OH had one of these yesterday. Before she could say anything he asked her if she had checked the TPS. She put the phone down.

This was on the radio this morning. It said that they employ hundreds of people in call centres, they are trying to get you to go to your computer and go to a website which will supposedly test your computer. Of course it shows you that you have a virus even though you don't. Some of the firms are trying to get you to buy fake virus protection. Others want remote access to your computer so they can look for bank account and password details.
The same thing happens with pop ups which purport to come from genuine anti virus companies, if you click on them, or follow a link, you are taken to a fake help desk who again pretend to be the real company.

The only way to be safe is not to follow links, but to type the full web address into your browser bar
