I've decided not to buy the lap trays as people on here have told me that they are no good for laptops. I'm going to go ahead and look for a laptop cooling pad - the link that Island gave me looks good.

Thanks for your advice Sylvia about men having laptops on their knees, and the fire risk too. Will tell my hubby to be careful.

Do be very careful with laptops


They get more than warm underneath


............... they can get very hot


Fires have started when a laptop is used (or left on) and / or placed on soft furnishings such as a settee, or tablecloth, or even on a wood or plastic surface.


In addition ................... men over here are warned not to use laptops on their knees

........... overheating in the groin area can cause sterility


Depends on your age as to how important that last bit is! :)))

I have tried the lap trays but they don't keep it cool. What I now have is a 'shelf' like stand I bought in A**a for £12 about 2 weeks ago which is sloping and allows the air to circulate under the laptop so keeping it cool and my knees don't get hot either.It wa sflat pack but you bend one part over to form the slope. It's also ergonomical too. (I Think I mean it's comfy to type)

Thanks Cynthia - another idea for me.

I have a polystyrene bead tray designed for a computer with a little side light on a bendy neck attached. It has space for pens and a cup but my laptop covers them. Got it from Dunn Elm Mill. Between the laptop and the tray I have one of fan bases - PC World but a bit dear!

I'm going to go and buy a fan assisted one. Will have to look round the shops and browse the internet for one.

laptops needs air so to sit it on a flat base can cause over heating,one of the proper laptop fan assisted bases are the best to dispurse the heat away from it.

Thanks everyone for your replies. The laptop cooling mats - I presume that they will have to be plugged into the electricity if they have a fan?

The polystyrene filled lap trays sound good. Though I will look into the cooling mats too.

We have trays with polystyrene filled bottoms for your lap, my hubby uses one to write on and do other things, it would hold a laptop I'm sure.

Is there such a thing as a laptop mat or something similar?
My husband uses his laptop placed on his knees, and it gets quite warm sometimes. I'm wondering if anyone can recommend anything I can buy that the laptop can sit on?
