Printer drum

This may sound stupid but why does a printer need to have the drum changed? I have a Brother laser printer and the drum light has started to flash. I have been given a tip as to how to override the drum light flashing which has worked. I've been told I need to buy a new one but don't understand why.
The toner has been changed twice since I bought it and it's printing fine. I have seen new drums can be bought as litlle as £25 on Ebay or £70 elsewhere.
Any advice please. I'm thinking it may be cheaper to buy a new printer.

It maybe clogged and they can be taken out to clean but unless you read up on how to do it as you can cause damage....they just need cleaing with clean paper and dont touch the glass looking roller with fingers because of grease,,,,

will be cheaper to buy a new printer in the christmas sales,,

Also remember, should you decide to discard your old printer, printers have memory......

Never dawned on me printers have memories thanks for that. Knew about PCs always careful about disposing of them. Son and OH take them to bits, smash something and then take main body to dump.

I see GR has renamed you Bob. You have become a victim of the system.

I have purchased a new drum for a photo copier when it was a company one and it was cheaper than puchasing a new copier at the time.

But as you say it is probably cheaper getting a new printer that does everything except make coffee than spending the money on a drum.

The drum turns/moves every time you print and it's wear and tear that leds to it needing replacing. Your printer is going to stop working all together if the drum isn't replaced eventually, yes you can get away with overriding the flashing light for awhile but not forever.

How come your name does not come up on the name line Michelle - I noticed that on another of our threads as well?

It means that no one can PM you as well.

Thanks to all who have taken the trouble to reply and apologies for not replying sooner but I was at work all day.
I think I'll be looking for a new printer in the sales in January.
Thanks too for the tip about destoying the old printer, like everyone else I wasn;t aware that it had a memory,

One thing to remember about buying a new printer - don't be fooled by offers of what appear to be cheap, reasonably priced printers.
I bought a brand new HP printer at a good price only to find that the ink is outragously expensive, so much so that it was cheaper to ditch the almost new HP and go and pay a little more for another new printer, a Kodak, with cheaper ink cartridges.
