Took the dogs out for a quick run at 4pm so they would settle so as we could sit and watch Children in Need. Came back from the walk, and it was getting dark by then, to find we had no electricity.

Searched around in the cupboard to find my supply of candles and nightlights then fed the dogs. Bu now there were flashing orange lights outside and a quick look saw the electicity van and the gas van opposite. Went over and asked "How long" and was told..."As long as it takes". it seems the gas and electricity supplies run side by side in the road and a leak had been discovered in the gas pipe. Needles to say, this was a problem. The electric had to be turned off as it could cause the gas to ignite and boom, boom.

As a "candle" person I had 150 nightlights and 20 candles, so we were not in the dark, but i cook with electicity, so Peter went to the chippy and bought some chips and we had a chip butty for tea.

No heating, but with over 40 candles alight, some heat was given off. I sat reading by torch light wrapped in a blanket. The electricity did not come back on until 1am this morning, but we missed all of Children in Need.
