Mayfield................. really good idea. I have spent the afternoon while he was out looking at old paperwork such as old passports, school records, letters from his beloved granddad and old photo's. I am going to get the photo's re-printed so I can play around with them in the 'book'.
I have to be a bit secretive as he is wondering why I'm on the PC a lot at the mo.

Thanks for all replies.

Hi, gemqueen,
Sounds like a nice idea.
Perhaps mock up the folder to look like a car workshop manual for "other half" model 1950-on (if my maths is correct) maybe use his N.I. number in place of chassis/engine number etc.

Best wishes,
Mayfield.

Glad to be of help. The beauty of using scrapbook or ring binders is that you can always go back and insert anything important that you missed out if need be - although having said that he never wanted any changes to be made once I had given it to him.

Enjoy yourself making it - it is lovely and satisfying to give someone such a personal gift.

Tina
Thank you for the suggestions. It's given me more ideas which I like but as time is limited I may not be able to include them all!
I think a trip to Hobby craft is in order tomorrow. His career has been in the motor trade so I like the idea of every car he's owned so I just need to find photo's of them.

Hi Gemqueen

I did exactly that for my ex husband's 40th some years ago. It was before I even knew that scrapbooking existed, so I didn't know you could get the 12 x 12 albums. I bought a black A3 file from Partners (as it was then) and a load of A3 card to punch and insert.

I used lots of photos, letters (first job offer etc), cards (ones the children had made for him, his own 1st birthday etc). I spent a fair bit of time with his parents getting thing to put in - early pictures, a lock of his hair from the first cut, a paint of his baby booties, his weighing in card. Anything precious like that I put in a cut down punched pocket and stuck that in so nothing was damaged.

I also got his parents and sister to write out some memories / funny stories from his childhood to put in. The book was roughly chronological and all the pages had titles, descriptions and stories which were typed, cut out and mounted on coloured card. There were sections on hobbies - he was car mad, so I tried to include a picture of every car he had ever owned along with any anecdotes. The children were still quite young so they ended the book with some pictures they drew and a story they wrote for his birthday, and I left room to add pictures of his 40th party and a few birthday cards.

It was a big success - the more personal memories the better - including those from friends and family.

Good luck with your book

My OH was 60 last week and as a present for birthday and Christmas I was going to present him with a book of his life including pictures and memorabilia. Can anyone suggest how I do this as I don't want to just fill a photo album but make it more interesting and unique? I had thought of scrap booking but haven't seen anything appropriate and I only have weekends to do it. I have 60 pages of family history without the photo's and other stuff so it's going to be a fairly big project.
Thanks in anticipation.
