New York City-ers are actually quite friendly in their own way, you know. Or when I was there on my own with some classmates when I was 15 (I still cannot believe my parents let me do that! I think I must have lied ...), they were -- always asking us if we were lost, did we need directions.

When it comes to accents, I forgot -- the absolute worst in the world is upstate New York (completely different from NYC). Nasal, flat, can't reproduce it on paper, just gawdawful.

- edit - youtube finds me a somewhat moderate version of upstate NY:

The "a" in "amber beer" is how the "o" in "dollars" is pronounced in the more extreme version -- like the "o" in the last word on the tape, "knowledge". ;)

Both my paternal gparents from there RR - love it as does OH. Ann in Glos -- have to agree with you re New York State - dreadful.

Strangely wherever I have gone I have found the people to be friendly other than people from New York state, Germany and many Cypriots. The friendliest in US have to be for me Floridians. Italians and most Canarian people are very friendly I have found.

My favourite dialects have to be West country, Cornwall, devon, Dorset and I love the Soth wales accents.

I am happy living in England. But if I had to go away I would choose North Tenerife.

Chris, Port St Mary is lovely :) SRS try and go to the IOM if you can...I keep saying I will go back there to visit but not made it yet in all these years :(.

I love a soft Irish accent, Italian's 'charming, South Wales accents are nice , nth Wales are much harder. I feel at home with Liverpool, Cheshire and London accents. :)

1, Irish are the friendliest.
2, Like lots of accents, (not too keen on Welsh ones though) sorry
3, Would live in Ireland if I could, I love the place, everything about it. Family commitments mean its not possible now but one day......................

Uh oh, I have offended an Aussie, who has threatened by PM to beat me up. ;)

Well, just as long as they don't keep talking at me while they're doing it!

lol I know Chris..... I meant to say that lol. However, many years ago I was invited across but the person inviting me was going over by ferry. There were other reasons why I couldn't go at the time but I didn't fancy the voyage lol

I must admit Janey, I loved Canada and I did like Canadians too. I haven't met many Australians but they do appear friendly - i think that sunshine must help :)

I must admit though, I do like certain Scottish accents.

Well of course Canuckistan and Canuckistanians on all points. ;) But other than that --

Aussies are pretty darned friendly, in my experience. Especially that TV camera guy who stayed with me in Toronto for a month ...

But their accent, ooh, cover yer ears. They're all over our TV these days for some reason, urging us to mail in our old scrap gold for dollars, populating the late-night infomercials for things that don't work ...

I've never been to the Isle of Man, I'll have to try and get there one day. The rough seas put me off.

I thought about my answers and decided I was boring but here goes anyway a) northerners, b) OH's North Hampshire accent (south Hampshire cannot tell difference from Home Counties) and country well it is not, although it has its own Parliament, laws and currency - that bit of heaven Isle of Man but I would be in the south of the island - Port St Mary!!

Following on from another thread, which nationality do you like the most....who are the friendliest etc?

Not necessarily the same question, which accent makes you swoon?

Lastly which country do you love the most? Where could you live?
