Norwich woman gives birth in the snow

It was almost a modern day nativity scene as Natalie J. gave birth to her son outside an inn on a snowy night a month before Christmas.

The drama unfolded as the 19-year-old got stuck in heavy traffic caused by the first of the snowy weather last Wednesday.

She had gone into labour and together with her sister and partner was on her way to hospital – but young Callum was so keen to get out that his mum ended up giving birth to him in freezing temperatures outside the Black Horse pub in Earlham Road, Norwich.

Similarly to how Joseph and Mary had called on the help of an innkeeper, James W. the landlord of the Black Horse, had to come to Miss J's aid, providing sheets.

The situation was very different from when Miss J had her daughter, two, when she was in labour for more than three days.

“It was pretty mad,” said the former Heartsease High School pupil who lives in Cotman Fields, near Bishopgate in the city. “We were on the way to hospital and I kept shouting, pull over, pull over, I need to push, so we pulled over at the pub.

“It was so cold but it all happened so quick. His head was out when I was in the car and my sister had almost delivered him when the ambulance arrived and they got me into the back of the ambulance just in time.”

Miss J. who lives with her partner Andy C. 22, gave birth to Callum in the back of the ambulance on Wednesday, just after 6pm. Young Callum, who weighed 7lb 1oz, was six days early. They were taken to the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital but returned home on the same day.

Miss J. added: “It was bit of a scary experience and was snowing really badly at the time but Callum is just beautiful. He has got a full head of hair and is just tiny, bless him.”

An East Of England Ambulance Service spokesman said: “We attended the lady at the Black Horse pub in Earlham Road after we were contacted by the delivery suite at the N&N.

“She was on the phone with the midwife and gave birth in the ambulance. We conveyed her to the N&N.”

A spokesman from the N&N said the mum and baby were fine and that Miss J. went home on the same day.

James W, from the Black Horse pub, said: “I was working on my own and it was quite busy when a woman came rushing in asking for some sheets as the lady she was with was having a baby.

“I found some maroon sheets to give her. It was snowing when it happened and the ambulance came, it was crazy. It all happened so fast.”

It's a lovely story altho the parents must have been really scared, it was so cold at the time too.
