Hi before i order a marradge certiicate can any one confirm i have the right one , The marrige certificate im trying to find is of david edward ellis and mary jane ??? it would be in 1888 in south wales possible pontypridd , any one help , many thanks neil

It's always as well to buy the birth cert of one of their children, which will give you the mother's maiden name.

You would normally expect to see a full complement of names i.e. 4, or 8 before 1852 - if not then there are likely to be either omissions or miss-transcriptions, and most certainly if there are an odd number of names.

The trouble if there are just two is that you have no way of telling with certainty if there should be more names.

Provided the names are not to common then it is sometimes possible to verify who married who by checking the following census(es) I tend to find this more useful for checking who a known female married, rather than the other way round. With a known male it is often easier to back from the census as this has provided you with the wife's first name. Sometimes this gives you a positive hit, but not always if all the ladies on the page are called Mary!
