Lowestoft supermarket worker’s £5.6m lottery win ‘shock’

LOWESTOFT supermarket worker Sue Stebbings is today celebrating a £5.6m lottery win.


Sue Stebbings, a check-out suprevisor at the town’s Asda store, scooped a £5,629,964 share of the Lotto Double Rollover jackpot in last Wednesday’s draw - and is still pinching herself that it’s not a dream.

She was getting ready for her early shift last Thursday morning when she checked her numbers on Teletext, and found that she had matched all six to win the jackpot. “I could not believe it,” she said.

“I kept looking at the screeen and at my ticket and seeing the same six numbers, but I thought I must have made a mistake.

“ I didn’t want to trust me eyes as it was only 5.45am, so I work up my husband and then our children so I could check I wasn’t seeing things. Even after they’d double checked I was still in shock.

“I went into work and told my boss but I couldn’t concentrate so he sent me home a couple of hours later.”

Sue 43, and her husband Richard, 46, who works in building maintenance, are now planning to celebrate Christmas in style with their family, including their two children aged 17 and 20.

They plan to pay off their mortgage and invest in their children’s future - and then start spending some of their winnings.

Top of their shopping list are new cars and a fishing boat.

Meanwhile, Mrs Stebbings and her husband are preparing themselves for plenty of media attention after picking up their winner’s cheque at Potters Leisure Resort in Hopton, near Great Yarmouth, this morning.

People living in Lowestoft have become instant millionaires thanks to the lottery on two previous occasions.

In July 2004, Graham Howlett won £2,248,000. His good fortune was mirrored by Stephanie Spindler who celebrated a £2,192,000 win in December 2006.

Maybe I better move, Lowestoft is about 30 miles from me but seems to be a lucky place. Don't think we have had any big wins in Norwich.

I did win a tenner last Wednesday, so better than nothing I suppose.

Kay, hope the move goes well. I haven't been to Lowestoft for a couple of years or more now, used to go to shows at the Marina Theatre but it's such a long way to have to drive home afterwards and I used to get the job cos o.h. doesn't see well to drive in the dark.

Well, if she is taking a year off, it will give her a chance to think about what to do with her life. Perhaps she will find something else to do. What with income tax, it certainly won't be worth working for a wage!

When the Lottery was still fairly new, someone in our area won about £3 mil. I was told by someone who knew him that he was bored stiff as he no longer had an incentive to get up/go to work, and hadn't found any hobbies or occupation to fill his time. At least with retirement, you can plan ahead for things to do within your budget or capabilites.

I was shopping in Lowestoft earlier today ..... maybe I should have bought a scratch card ......lol

Rita, that's one of the things I would spend any good winnings on, and loads more charities need help including many overseas, the street kids and such living, no existing, in deplorable conditions and other things needing funding here now that there are so many cuts in government backing.
Also I have lots of pals who could do with a little help to make their lives easier, and I would never get bored, I would be travelling and finding ways of making life interesting.

As you say voluntary work would keep her occupied and she could maybe just go to Asda on a very part time basis so creating an opening for someone else. MInd you, Asda might not have a place for her in a year's time, she might just have to shop there often to see her friends!

At the mo if I had the money I would help out those elderly people who are struggling to buy oil for their heating after it has rocketed in price in the past few weeks. A lot of places out in the sticks in Norfolk have to rely on oil to heat their houses as their is no gas supply available.
