Hi Dizzi,
Thank you for that. I think i know now why wrong name of husband was on Death cert, may have been informants husbands name instead of Dead persons.
Thank you so very much,
Regards,
Lily.

Hi Berona,
They did both have two Christian names(very lucky for me) They were both Catholic, was unusual for the time frame and the place of birth, otherwise i might never have found them because of the lies that were told by S.S.
Thank you for replying,
Lily.

The birth certificates are more than likely the ones to go by. Many people are given two names and the second one becomes the only one used, so they are not known by the first name - and as said before - the "informant" tells it the way they know it, for death certificates.

Are you sure the husband had two christian names? If he was a Catholic, the second name could be his Confirmation name. This is unique to the Catholic religion and nothing to do with the register of B,M,& D. Also, it is not legal. The name is given to them around the age of 9 and many grow up believing it to be their registered name. The confirmation name is always a Saint's name.

You can get it changed. We had my father's Death Certificate amended in 1981 as there were errors with his name and date of birth.

However, the changes were initiated by the Coroner as he was the original informant, so I'm not sure how you will get on if you attempt to get the changes made, not being the original informant.

The original entry still stands but the cert shows the revised details at the bottom with words to the effect that the alteration was made by the Superintendent Registrar on authority of a certificate from the Coroner.

As a result, there are now 4 entries, in the GRO.

Wrong name wrong date
Right name wrong date
Wrong name right date
Right name, right date

all now cross referenced to point to the last, corrected, one.

As far as my own marriage is concerned, both our surnames were incorrectly indexed by the GRO. I wrote to them with the correct details and after a few months they confirmed that the original cert entry is correct but that both names had been miss-transcribed on to the index, which they had now corrected. The did point out that it would not be possible to see the corrections on sites such as Ancestry as there were currently no plans to provide third parties with any more copies of the index.

Lindsey, it is a death cert. Info on a death cert is only as good as the knowledge of the person giving it (the 'informant').

Who was the informant, Lily? If it was her husband then I dont see how you could have it altered, although I dont really know about English certs. But as Lindsay said, you can add a postem on freeBMD, giving alternative names and ages.

Huia.

If your marriage is listed on free BMD you can of course add a postem with your comments for anyone else searching.

Hi Lindsey,
Thank you for your reply.
It is very difficult to explain completely but husbands name was JJ (H) the surname is right but christian name (D)is wrong.
I don,t mind the other mistakes, over here we can apply to General Registor to change mistakes on certs, but it is up to him to decide, just wondering if it is the same in U.K.?
Thanks.
Lily.

I very much doubt you could or should change it now, at the time those were the names they chose to give.

Anyone can alter their name age etc. there are no checks made at the marriage nor is it legally required
