Hey, at least yours have certificates!

And they didn't go changing their surnames once a decade ... and emigrating to Australia for five years, just in time for the census ...

But if mine hadn't done those things -- made their best efforts to hide from the authorities, and creditors, and me -- I'd have missed out on years of entertainment ... and regular readers of the Hill/Monck threads hereabouts would have missed out on, oh, 20 minutes of their own ... ;)

I understand where you are coming from. It took me six months to find out that my uncle john was my uncle Thomas and my aunt jean was my auntie Elizabeth and that is just two of them on my side Sandy

I understood why my Aunt did it, it was because she wanted all her children to have the same initial letter as their Father to their first name so they were known by their middle name, but then her last child didn't have that and it was not connected in any way to anyone else, my Uncle (Brother of the above) was known by his middle name but I needed to get his death cert (I knew what year that was) to find that out.

Oh yes, Susan, I agree they were very annoying - just like my auntie Pat who was actually named Agnieska,

or my auntie May who was really Charlotte,
and my g.uncle Colley who had been baptised Robert Cole.
Then there was g.aunt Lil, who was not Lily but Elizabeth.
And Iris who was Lily and not Lil.....
etc etc etc!!!!
LOL
God bless them all

Ellenor decided she didn't like her name, or its diminutives and decided she wanted to be known as Doris. Thank goodness mother in law remembered, bless her cotton socks - lol

Totally frustrating aren't they??

OH had an uncle Ben, know as big Ben. Could I find a Benjamin anywhere? Could I heck.

Eventually tracked him down as Thomas. Why big Ben? 'cos he was tall of course!!

Why didn't I think of that in the first place....lol
